Sifu's Tea Table

8 more bits of (possibly) bad advice.

NEIL ANDREW RIPSKI·FRIDAY, MARCH 9, 2018

A follow up to my note on Facebook last year ( https://www.facebook.com/notes/neil-andrew-ripski/9-bits-of-possibly-bad-advice/1557569930966456/More )

More possibly bad advice for people willing to listen.

☰ ☵ ☶ ☳ ☴ ☲ ☷ ☱

1- Don’t feel your own power, let them feel it.

2- Pacifism should be a choice not a foregone conclusion.

3- Some people need a slap.

4- Straight is not Vertical.

5- Alignment is not Structure.

6- It’s all metaphors! There is not a mystical glowing ball in your guts.

7- Don’t copy your opponent, beat them.

8- Read as much as you work out, strong mind and body makes a martial artist.

☰ ☵ ☶ ☳ ☴ ☲ ☷ ☱

1- Don’t feel your own power, let them feel it.

Every bit of muscular force we can feel in our own bodies as we move is a result of the antagonistic muscles flexing against our movements. The tricep extends the arm, why do we flex our bicep then when we punch? We want to feel we have power, to soothe our ego and our fears. You don’t need to feel it – they do. RELAX.

2- Pacifism should be a choice not a foregone conclusion.

“I do believe that, where there is only a choice between cowardice and violence, I would advise violence...” – Ghandi. Choosing to be passive when you have the potential for violence is very different than being condemned through weakness to be a pacifist. Choice gives you power. Power gives you choice.

3- Some people need a slap.

Sometimes violence is inevitable and the only way to safely get out of a situation. Some demons need killing and some people need a slap. Do what you think is right at all times and you will never have regrets of your actions.

4- Straight is not Vertical.

Vertical is the plumb line between heaven and earth. Straightness in the body is the alignment from the head to the feet. While they may appear at the same time, they are not the same thing.

5- Alignment is not Structure.

The alignment of the skeleton to deal with force is not the same as structure in the body. Structure is the use of the round, the tensegrity structure of the body and its connective tissue. They may both exist at once, but they are not the same thing.

6- It’s all metaphors! There is not a mystical glowing ball in your guts.

Seriously. Without anatomy training in the days of old the use of language became ways to create thought patterns in students. Imagery, imagination, metaphors, these things change the way you think about your body and so physiological changes follow it. It is not meant to be taken as literally as people do.

7- Don’t copy your opponent, beat them.

We tend to do as our opponent does. If they are punching and boxing we copy and do the same, if they kick, we kick. This is the same as in conversation where we mirror each other’s body language, posture and volume to connect and communicate. A good martial artist will use this to their advantage through awareness and not fall prey to it.

8- Read as much as you work out, strong mind and body makes a martial artist.

Read a damn book.

BONUS CRAPPY ADVICE:

Get over yourself, don’t believe your own press and just keep moving forward. Masters are not “promoted” they are recognized. Stop looking for a promotion or buying a certificate to feel better about yourself. Do the work, results follow.

My two cents – Mileage may vary.

Blah blah blah martial arts, I write books http://www.lulu.com/spotlight/redjademartialarts
